Most schools wait 25 years to stage a grand reunion, but at Morning Star Secondary School, theyíll settle for 23.

As a result of the upcoming amalgamation with neighboring Westwood high school and the closing of Morning Star, the school will host Reunion 2000 this weekend.

The event will feature the unearthing of a time capsule that was buried shortly after the opening of the school in 1977.

The time capsule will be opened at a ceremony, Saturday from 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. The ceremony will be attended by staff and students who were at the school went it opened.

Among the gathering will be the ìOriginal Six,î the half-dozen teachers who have taught at Morning Star since its inception. The group includes John Rodger, Les Hackett, Jorn Kristiansen, Janet McBride, Dave Dorward and Leo Goldsmith. Ken Teeter, the original principal of the school, has died.

The time capsule, which is buried in front of the school, includes a rock music poster, a roll of 1978 pennies, a Molson Export beer bottle, and to top it all off, a Big Mac container.

An open house for all Morning Star alumni will follow from 1-5 p.m. It will feature slide presentations and wall of fame displays.

Morning Star principal Bruce Parrack said the open house organizers wanted to avoid lengthy speeches.

ìWe want to focus on friendships and old acquaintances, reminisce on the past and look forward,î said Parrack.

Following the open house, there will be a dinner and dance, beginning at 5:30 p.m. at the Constellation Place Hotel. Tickets are on sale for $60.

Meanwhile, all 1977 alumni are invited to the Arizona Bar & Grill on June 9, to get an early start on the reunion.

The new school, which will be called Lincoln Alexander Secondary School, will be home to approximately 1,600 students. Westwood principal Maurice Hudson will take over the reigns.

Meanwhile, Morning Star will become a middle school, serving Grades 6-8.

For information about the reunion, call 677-0300.
